What's New at Canadian Shield Consultants?
WATER TREATMENT: Premier Tech Aqua and Canadian Shield team up for cleaner solution
RIVIÈRE-DU-LOUP, Quebec - There is a wastewater treatment option suitable for sites that require surface deposal, that freeze severely in the winter, that have very rigorous disposal standards, and where transportation is either over an ice road or by air. It is the Ecoflo® made by Premier Tech Aqua, with offices throughout Canada. The systems are compact, economical, durable, flexible and gaining fame across North America, according to the manufacturer.
Canadian Shield Consultants, an Ontario engineering firm that specializes in wastewater and water treatment infrastructure projects, chose Premier Tech Aqua's Ecoflo system after several studies and analyses. CSC applied to and received approval from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment to install the equipment. The MOE judged Ecoflo to offer results in line with its plan to reduce toxins Canadian Shield has installed five Ecoflo mobile systems for remote mining and exploration camps in northern Ontario. Each unit has a treatment capacity of 2,015 L/d (average design flow) and includes a 4,300-litre septic tank as well as the Ecoflo STB-650 that will treat grey water.
To facilitate the installation, the units were pre-assembled at the Premier Tech Aqua plant. Since a unit could not exceed 450 kg, leaching chambers replaced the clean stone at the bottom of the shells. The pumping stations, septic tanks and biofilters were insulated in polyurethane and a protective coating against UV rays was applied. To keep the units from freezing, a heat tracer was integrated within the system. The installation was completed in only two days.
Because of the Ecoflo's excellent performance record, the MOE allowed final disposal of the treated water directly into a natural environment. Now, the next step for Canadian Shield Consultants is to obtain the MOE's authorization to treat black and grey water treatment with Ecoflo and septic tank followed by UV treatment unit, creating a less expensive and better performing solution than incinerating toilets.

CANADIAN SHIELD CONSULTANTS AGENCY AND PREMIER TECH AQUA
Major Wastewater Treatment Breakthrough in the Mining Industry
Canadian Shield Consultants Agency (CSCA) was created in 1996 operating from St-Charles under the direction of the CEO Gerry Dignard and his team of certified professionals. Engineering staff (P.Eng./B.Eng.) Licensed and Accredited “Designer and Installer”. CSCA can offer their professional expertise a turn-key solution to wastewater and sewage. CSCA turned its attention to the wastewater and process water treatment options for Ontario’s mining sector. Recently installed our first “Mobile Treatment System” for Gold Canyon in the Ear Falls area. Having assisted companies such as Rubicon Minerals Corp., Lakes Shore Gold Corp., Quadra FNX Mining Ltd. First Nickel Inc., North American Palladium. CSCA is also a provider of site, soil and water contamination rehabilitation, water safety, biosolids uses in the agricultural industry, sales and service of a variety of wastewater treatment systems. CSCA is now working with Waterloo Biofilter Systems to complete the spectrum of sewage flows for remote mining and exploration sites, and especially with the transportable, re-locatable systems that Waterloo has pioneered. Portable or containerized Waterloo systems are used in the far north at temporary & permanent oil drilling and exploration camps, using their patented low energy biofiltration technology suitable for remote locations. Fully assembled containerized modules can be installed in parallel to scale up for larger flows. For smaller fly camps, the new ‘cassette’ system can be slung by helicopter from camp to camp to meet the most stringent MOE sewage requirements. CSCA is able to provide and manage the best sewage treatment for your camps, leaving you to concentrate on mine findings. CSCA is now offering a technology powered by O3zomax in developing comprehensive packages wastewater treatment systems to deal with mine process or other high strength wastes. “Canadian Shield Consultants Agency Mining Breakthrough,” recently received approval from MOE to install five Ecoflo mobile systems for mining camps in Northern Ontario. Over the past two years, mining research and operations in Ontario has skyrocketed. This newfound surge can be seen more particularly in the Great North region known as the Ring of Fire. In an effort to find wastewater treatment solution, some mining companies approached CSCA however several limitations had to be taken into consideration; surface disposal had to be used (unfavourable soils). There was a risk of deep freezing temperatures, disposal standards were very rigorous and transporting the systems to the camps was a problem (ice roads or airplane). Following several studies and analyses CSCA requested the MOE approval to install an Ecoflo treatment system, MOE gave its consent. Canadian Shield Consultants has covered Ontario from border to border and has clients in many parts of Canada.

Major Wastewater Treatment Breakthrough in the Mining Industry
Canadian Shield Consultants, an Ontario engineering firm that specializes in wastewater and water treatment infrastructure projects, has just received approval from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (MOE) to install five (5) Ecoflo® mobile systems for outpost, mining and exploration camps in Northern Ontario.
Situation in the Mining Industry
Over the past two years, mining research and operations in Ontario have taken off. In fact, you might even say they’ve skyrocketed. This newfound surge can be seen more particularly in the Great North region known as the Ring of Fire, some 240 kilometres west of James Bay and north of Thunder Bay. At the present time, some 40 mining and exploration companies are active at the heart of this coveted and much publicized sector.
Mining camps popped up so quickly that there was no time to measure the impact of these new activities on the environment. This gave rise to earnest discussions between the MOE, exploration groups and the Grand Chiefs of the First Nations. The Grand Chiefs feared that the activities would have a major negative impact on the fauna and flora of the Great North, a fragile natural environment.
Well-Founded Fears
Until January 2011, mining camps were equipped with incinerating toilets to treat black water. Grey water was discharged directly into the environment without any treatment. Then, the MOE intervened by ordering mining operations submit a solution to comply with the disposal standards.
Challenges
In an effort to find a wastewater treatment solution, some mining companies approached Canadian Shield Consultants. However, several limitations had to be taken into consideration:
- Surface disposal had to be used (unfavorable soil)
- There was a risk of deep freezing temperatures
- The disposal standards were very rigorous
- Transporting the systems to the camps was a problem (ice roads and airplane)
Solution
Following several studies and analyses, Canadian Shield Consultants requested the MOE’s approval to install an Ecoflo® treatment system developed by Premier Tech Aqua. The request Canadian Shield Consultants was making was in line with the MOE’s Plan to Reduce Toxins, that is, install a technology that would correct a situation regarding lack of respect for the environment. This type of authorization is rarely granted in Ontario. The MOE gave its consent to install five (5) mobile wastewater treatment systems.
Each station has a treatment capacity of 2 015 L/d (average design flow) and includes:
- One (1) PST-500 septic tank from Premier Tech Aqua, equipped with an effluent filter and a capacity of 4 300 litres
- One (1) Ecoflo® STB-650 from Premier Tech Aqua with a capacity of 2 015 litres
